A small village of North Ayrshire, Longbar is located in the Garnock Valley, 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Kilbirnie and a similar distance southwest of Beith. To the north lies Kilbirnie Loch and the Willowyard Industrial Estate. In the 19th C. Longbar comprised rows of terraced cottages housing miners for its colliery, which produced coal and fireclay for the former Glengarnock Ironworks. Later, public housing was developed and much of the population was employed by the Glengarnock Steel Works.
