A small village of Midlothian, Middleton lies in the northern foothills of the Moorfoot Hills, 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Gorebridge and 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Borthwick. The early 18th C. Middleton Hall lies in a parkland estate immediately to the east.
The village of North Middleton lies alongside the A7 trunk road a half-mile (1 km) to the north.
