A small village located on the steep slopes of the valley of River North Esk, 1¼ miles (2 km) northwest of Penicuik (Midlothian). Auchendinny was long associated with paper-production but the Dalmore Mill, which began operation in 1837, closed in 2005 and has subsequently been demolished for housing. The Penicuik branch of the Peebles Railway once served the mill and a tunnel is extant. The village had a station on the same line, which opened in 1872 but closed in 1951.
The early 18th C. Auchendinny House is a fine Palladian villa by Sir William Bruce (1630 - 1710).
