Smoo

Highland

A locality and small crofting township on the north coast of Sutherland, Smoo lies a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Durness. Smoo Lodge was built by an Orcadian merchant in the 18th century. In 1940, a Chain Home radar station was built at Lerinbeag, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north, and various ruined buildings remain. The Smoo Burn (Allt Smoo) passes through Smoo Cave - a notable large limestone cavern which lies at the head of the narrow inlet of Geodh Smoo.
