Oldmeldrum

A town in the parish of Meldrum, central Aberdeenshire, situated on the A947 road, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Aberdeen. Created a burgh of barony in 1672, Oldmeldrum was the main burgh of the mediaeval lordship of Garioch until the 19th Century when it was superseded by Inverurie five miles south. Known mostly as Meldrum, its narrow streets reflect the irregular plan of the old mediaeval market town which is centred around the Market Square with its fine Town Hall of 1877. A centre of the hosiery trade in the 18th century, Oldmeldrum parish church dates from 1684.

The town has a library, Pleasure Park (Keil Brae) and 9-hole golf course, and each June it plays host to the Old Meldrum Show and Sports. The parish of Meldrum within which it is situated was known as Bethelnie until 1684. Meldrum House to the north of the town is associated with the Seton and Urquhart families.
