Smithstone

(Smithston)
North Lanarkshire

A residential suburb of Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire, Smithstone lies 2 miles (3 km) west of the town centre. Shown as a farmstead called Smithstown on the First Edition of the Ordnance Survey map, a settlement known as Smithston Row had developed by the end of the 19th C. to house workers in nearby coal mines and quarries. The area developed as a private housing estate from 2003. The remains of Smithston Quarry can still be found in woodland in the south of the area, while Croy Station and its associated park-and-ride facility lie immediately to the north.
