New Kelso

Highland

An estate, farm and former settlement of the Ross and Cromarty district of Highland Council Area, New Kelso lies 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Lochcarron. In an attempt to bring employment to the area, a linen industry was established here, with the aid of government grants, shortly after the 1745 Jacobite Rising. A gentleman from Kelso in the Scottish Borders, called Ninian Jeffreys, came north to manage the scheme and drained land next to the River Carron in order to grow flax. The industry failed when the grants were withdrawn.
