Gills Harbour, providing a ferry to Orkney

A scattered crofting township on the north coast of Caithness, Gills lies between Mey and Canisbay, 4 miles (6.5 km) west of John o' Groats. Upper Gills lies a half-mile (1 km) to the south and there is a terminal on Gills Bay which provides a ferry connection to St. Margaret's Hope on Orkney. The terminal was constructed in the 1980s for a ferry which was run by the Orkney Islands Council, but the service was short-lived. It was re-established in 2001 by an Orkney entrepreneur.
