Clashmore

Highland

A small settlement in E Sutherland, Highland Council Area, Clashmore lies to the north of the Dornoch Firth, 4 miles (6.5 km) west of Dornoch. It once had a cattle market and nearby, the Bishops of Caithness had a summer castle in the 12th-13th centuries. Associated with the cathedral in Dornoch, this castle came to be known as Skibo. In 1897 Skibo Castle was bought by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie who transformed it into a massive Scottish baronial mansion. This building was eventually converted into the exclusive Carnegie Club in 1994 and has been the venue for a number of celebrity weddings including the pop star Madonna.
