Banavie

(Banbhaidh)
Highland

A hamlet in Lochaber, Highland Council Area, Banavie lies on the Caledonian Canal, 2 miles (3 km) north of Fort William. Just a few houses until the late 20th century, Banavie has grown through the development of private housing. Banavie has a station on the West Highland line and a primary school. Located here are a flight of eight locks, known as Neptune's Staircase, and two swing-bridges - for road and railway - which open to allow vessels to pass into the locks. The sizeable Banavie Quarry produces aggregate for road-building.
