Berriedale

Highland

A hamlet in a sheltered location on the east coast of Caithness, Highland Council Area, Berriedale lies 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Brora at a point where the Berriedale Water and Langwater meet. An Iron Age broch stands on nearby Ousdale Head and 18th-19th-century Langwell House overlooks the village which is associated with the Duke of Portland's estate. On a clifftop overlooking the beach stand the ruins of the 15th-century Berriedale Castle and nearby are twin navigation towers have been dubbed the Duke's Candlesticks. Former fishermen's cottages line the shore while the parish church and manse of Berriedale date from 1826 when they were built to a standard Parliamentary design by Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834). Caithness Spring water is bottled here and a wind generator erected in the 1980s is to be found in Glen Langwell. Also in the glen is a walled garden that is open to the public during the summer.
