Arabella

Highland

A linear agricultural hamlet in Easter Ross, Highland Council Area, Arabella lies to the north of Nigg Bay, 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Invergordon. The estate was bought by Hugh Rose of Glastullich c.1800, who made his money in the West Indies. It takes its name from his first wife, Arabella Phipps, who died in 1806 aged only 27 years. A community developed here after the Board of Agriculture for Scotland bought the estate in 1918 and created twenty-eight small holdings for soldiers returning from the First World War. Arabella House still lies to the southwest and Arabella Bridge immediately to the northeast.
