Caiyside, Fairmilehead

A residential suburb on the southern edge of the city of Edinburgh, Fairmilehead lies between the Braids and the city bypass. It was largely developed in latter half of the 20th century. Since 1936 the National Trust for Scotland has maintained the Caiy Stone, a 2.7-metre (9-feet) tall prehistoric cup-marked stone also known as General Kay's Monument or the Kel Stone. The stone possibly marks the site of an ancient battle, possibly between the Picts and the Romans. The Princess Margaret Rose Hospital was built here in 1929, originally as a children's orthopaedic hospital, but closed in 1998.
