Whitecraig is a former mining village, which lies close to the western boundary of East Lothian, some 2 miles (3 km) south of Musselburgh and 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Edinburgh. The village was developed during the 20th Century amongst agricultural land to provide homes for miners. Its facilities include a primary school, playing field, several shops and a post office. There are few employment opportunities in the village and some poverty exists as a result.
