Waterside

East Ayrshire

A former industrial village in the valley of the River Doon, Waterside lies 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Dalmellington. In 1847 a large ironworks employing over 2000 men was established here by the Dalmellington Iron Company and seven years later a railway station was opened. The ironworks closed in 1921 and in 1936 the Dunaskin Brickworks was built on the site of the iron furnaces. Waterside's housing was largely cleared and the brickworks eventually closed in 1976. In 1998 the Dunaskin Open-Air Museum celebrating the industrial heritage of Ayrshire was opened
