Patna


East Ayrshire

A former mining village in East Ayrshire, Patna is situated on the River Doon, 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Dalmellington. the village was named in the early 19th century by local landowner William Fullarton of Skeldon who was born in the Indian city of Patna. Originally a scattered community, the village developed in the 19th century in association with coal mining and the ironworks in Dalmellington. Villagers in nearby Lethanhill and Benquhat were relocated to Patna in the mid-20th century.
