Balerno

A former mill village situated west of Edinburgh on the left bank of the Water of Leith, Balerno is today a commuter district and was incorporated into the city in 1975. Notable buildings include Cockburn House (1672) and the early 17th Century Malleny House, administered by the National Trust for Scotland. A rail link from Edinburgh was created in 1874, but passenger trains stopped in 1943 and the line finally closed in the 1960s.
