Closeburn

Dumfries and Galloway

A village of Nithsdale in Dumfries and Galloway, Closeburn lies to the east of the River Nith, 11 miles (17 km) northwest of Dumfries. The settlement benefits from a post office and a primary school. There was once a railway station here on the Glasgow and South Western Railway. It opened with the line in 1849 but closed in 1964, although line continues. Lying to the east, Closeburn Castle is a former stronghold of the Kirkpatricks and dates from c.1380-1420 with an adjoining mansion of a later period.
