Tynron

Dumfries and Galloway

A former kirkton settlement of Nithsdale in Dumfries and Galloway, Tynron lies in a hollow on the Shinnel Water, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Moniaive. It comprises a single row of 19th-century cottages with a church, manse, former school and schoolhouse. The actress Joanna Lumley and her husband, the conductor Stephen Barlow, maintain a home here. At Tynron Doon, on a spur of nearby Auchengibbert Hill, there are a 16th-century tower and the ramparts and ditches of an Iron Age hill-fort.
