A location in Dumfries and Galloway, Ross lies at the southern end of a peninsula extending into the Solway Firth 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Kirkcudbright. Situated at the head of Ross Bay, an inlet of Kirkcudbright Bay, the cairn-topped Mull of Ross rises to the west. To the south of Ross Bay, the Meikle Ross forms a headland which is separated from the island of Little Ross by the Sound and Ross Roads.
