Laurieston

Dumfries and Galloway

An attractive little village of mainly 19th-century white-painted houses in Dumfries and Galloway, Laurieston lies on the Camelon Lane burn, 10 miles (16 km) south of New Galloway. There is a monument to the novelist S. R. Crockett (1860 - 1914), author of 'The Raiders' and 'Men of the Moss Hags', who was born at Balmaghie Farm and educated in Laurieston. A co-operative community was established at Laurieston Hall in 1972. Laurieston Primary School closed in 2002.
