A location in South Lanarkshire, Poniel lies immediately to the west of the M74 Motorway, a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Happendon and 2 miles (3 km) north of Douglas. Opencast coal workings eat into Poniel Hill to the south, while the Poniel Water is a tributary of the Douglas Water. The 170-ha / 420-acre Poniel Industrial Park is being developed as a distribution centre, but is dominated by the Poniel Blend Centre & Maturation Warehouse Facility - John Dewar & Sons state-of-the-art blending facility which alone covers 40.5 ha (100 acres). Each of the eighteen immense warehouses can hold up to 72,000 casks of whisky.
