A small village of Dumfries and Galloway, Haugh of Urr lies at a crossroads between the old military road connecting Dumfries and Castle Douglas, above the flood plain of the Urr Water, 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Castle Douglas and 4 miles (6.5 km) north northwest of Dalbeattie. For the most part the settlement comprises whitewashed cottages and it benefits from a small hotel, village hall and a church. Its last shop closed in 2009 and the post-office moved into the hotel. Nearby is the Motte of Urr.
