Hollows

Dumfries and Galloway

A small hamlet in Eskdale, Dumfries and Galloway, Hollows (originally Holehouse) lies on the River Esk just over a mile (1.5 km) to the north of Canonbie. The 18th century Hollows Mill still uses water-power to process corn into animal feed. The Duke of Buccleuch is said to have mined coal here, but the mine was abandoned in 1770 after a flood. Gilnockie (or Hollows) Tower lies to the north, with a limeworks beyond which operated in the 18th and 19th centuries.
