Balmaclellan
Dumfries and Galloway

A village of the Glenkens district of Dumfries and Galloway, Balmaclellan lies east of the Water of Ken and 2 miles (3 km) northeast of New Galloway. The parish church dates from 1772 and in its kirkyard are stones commemorating Robert Grierson, a Covenanter martyred in 1683, and the family of Robert Paterson, the original of Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Old Mortality'. Just over a mile (1.5 km) to the northeast stands Barscobe Castle which was built in 1648 by William Maclellan.
