Gremista

A northern industrial district of Lerwick in Shetland, Gremista is located 1¼ miles (2 km) northwest of the town centre and is principally associated with Lerwick Harbour. In addition, Shetland College, Lerwick Power Station, a 130-berth marina and an industrial estate are to be found at Gremista. Recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1880 as Grimsta, it then comprised a farm and a mill on the North Burn of Gremista. Gremista Farm is still extant. The Bod of Gremista (c.1780) was the birthplace of shipping tycoon Arthur Anderson (1792 - 1868). This was surrounded by a series of fishing huts and developed into a thriving herring station by the end of the 19th Century. The Hill of Gremista lies a mile (1.4 km) to the north.
