Dryden

A location in Midlothian, Dryden lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of Roslin and a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Loanhead in Midlothian. Associated with the former Dryden Estate which was centred on Dryden House (demolished in 1938), the land was property of the Dryden family, but acquired by the Sinclairs in the 15th C., then the Lockharts of Carnwath in the 17th C. and the Trotters in the 19th C. Much of the estate was lost to the Loanhead Colliery and its successor, Bilston Glen Super Colliery. Remaining are Dryden Tower and Dryden Farm, which became the centre of an animal breeding research centre and is owned by the University of Edinburgh. Dryden Bank House in Loanhead dates from the early 19th C.
