Overview of Abbey St Bathans

The village of Abbey St. Bathans is located on the banks of the Whiteadder Water, 5 miles (8 km) north of Duns within the Scottish Borders. The Monynut Water and the burns of Weir and Eller both join the Whiteadder at Abbey St. Bathans. The nunnery of St Mary was founded here in the 12th Century by Ada, the Countess of Dunbar and remains from it have been incorporated into the church building. The village sits in fertile lowland with wooded lower slopes surrounding the area. A copper mine was opened nearby in 1828, but was relatively unsuccessful and was closed soon afterwards. A foot-bridge over the Whiteadder Water was built by the Gurkhas in 1987.
