Overview of Kilmartin

A village in the Lorn district of Argyll and Bute, Kilmartin lies on the Kilmartin Burn which joins the River Add between Crinan Loch and Loch Awe, 10 miles (16 km) north of Lochgilphead and 28 miles (45 km) south of Oban. In the surrounding area there are the remains of a number of prehistoric standing stones, stone circles and chambered cairns as well as the restored Kilmartin Castle and the ruined Carnasserie Castle, which was built for Bishop Carswell of Argyll and the Isles. The ruined Poltalloch House nearby was built for the Malcolm family in the mid-19th century. Kilmartin Church has a fine collection of 13th-17th-century grave stones as well as a group of crosses. The manse is now occupied as the Centre for Archaeology and Landscape and Kilmartin House Museum of Ancient Culture highlights the remarkable archaeology of the area.
