A location and old parish, in the Howe of the Mearns (Angus) Stracathro lies on the Cruick Water, near its junction with the North Esk, 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Brechin, and close to the border between Angus and Aberdeenshire. It is the site of a Roman fort, a school, a church, Stracathro House, a Neo-Classical mansion (1827) by the Aberdeen architect Archibald Simpson (1790 - 1847), which was part of Stracathro Hospital for many years. This hospital was established as an Emergency Medical Services Hospital in 1939 and continues as a general hospital for NE Angus. In 1130 an army of King David I defeated Angus, Mormaer of Moray at a battle at Stracathro and it was in the parish church here that Edward I of England humiliated John Balliol by depriving him of his kingship in 1296.
