Lyness
Orkney

A small settlement on the east coast of the Orkney island of Hoy, Lyness looks out across the Gutter Sound to the island of Fara. It was home to thousands of military personnel during two World Wars when it was the site of the headquarters and oil terminal for the Scapa Flow naval base (HMS Proserpine). The base closed in 1957, but a naval cemetery remains and a visitor centre opened in the former fuel-pumping station.
