Shotts

Located southeast of Glasgow in North Lanarkshire, the former industrial village of Shotts grew with the exploitation of coal and ironstone in the 19th Century, particularly through the efforts of the Shotts Iron Company. The original village was at the isolated Kirk of Shotts, situated adjacent to the M8 motorway and east of the village of Salsburgh. The village of Shotts is just north of the first stage of the South Calder Water; nearby is a golf course, Hartwoodhill Hospital, Shotts prison (Shotts Unit, created in 1990 as an extension of the Barlinnie Special Unit and which housed 10 long-term prisoners in 1998).
