Fern (Fearn)

A small settlement on the edge of the Braes of Angus, Fern, or Fearn, lies to the north of the River South Esk, 7 miles (11 km) west of Brechin. Its church, rebuilt in 1806, is said to have been founded in the 7th Century by Bishop Colman and dedicated to St Aidan. To the south, by the Noran Water, stand the ruins of Vayne Castle a former seat of the Montealto or Mowat family from the 12th century until the mid 15th century. In a sandstone rock close to the castle is the so-called Kelpie's Footmark.
