A settlement in South Lanarkshire, Bothwell lies 2 miles (3 km) east of Blantyre on the opposite side of the River Clyde, 2 miles (3 km) north of Hamilton and adjacent to the M74 motorway. Associated with the coal, iron and steel industries which predominated in the area in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the town grew in association with nearby Hamilton and Blantyre. To the southeast of the town is the site of Bothwell Bridge Battlefield.
