Drumchapel (Chapelton)
Glasgow City

A residential area on the northwest periphery of the city of Glasgow, Drumchapel lies 6 miles (10 km) northwest of the city centre. Formerly known as Chapelton, the village of Drumchapel expanded following the purchase of the Garscadden Estate by Glasgow City Corporation in 1939, although it was not until the late 1940s that housing development got underway. By 1971 Drumchapel's population reached a peak of 34,000, but with a lack of services and local employment opportunities, 'The Drum' came to be synonymous with poverty and vandalism. In 1992 the Mercat Theatre was opened by the Drumchapel Community Organisation Council to promote the arts.
