Aird Uig

Western Isles

A crofting township on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Aird Uig (also Aird Uige) lies a half-mile (1 km) south of Gallan Head, 24 miles (38 km) west of Stornoway. RAF Aird Uig, to the north of the settlement, was once the site of an important communications and monitoring station. While a small part of the facility is still used by NATO, the associated military camp was sold in 1973, with some of its buildings converted as housing, a restaurant and hotel, while other blocks remain empty and disused.
