Provanmill

Glasgow City

Once a small 19th Century settlement located 2½ miles (4 km) east northeast of Glasgow City centre, Provanmill has developed as a residential suburb, the site of inter-war housing development built in response to the city's programme of slum clearances. Over 300 cottage flats were built, of varying designs, and this scheme was pushed northward to include parts of Robroyston. The gangster Arthur Thompson (1931-93) lived in an ostentatiously-converted council house on Provanmill Road, nicknamed The Ponderosa.
