Overview of Brig o' Turk

A small scattered village, Brig o' Turk is situated on the 'Trossachs Trail', 6 miles (10 km) west of Callander and 19 miles (30 km) northwest of Stirling. Its inhabitants comprise commuters and those employed in the forestry, farming, tourism and water industries. Notable visitors have included Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901), who presented 'Muckle Kate' - the landlady of the inn - with a golden sovereign, poet William Wordsworth (1770 - 1850) together with his sister Dorothy (1771 - 1855), literary critic John Ruskin (1819 - 1900) and painter John Everett Millais (1829 - 1926). Overlooking the village are the peaks of Ben Venue and Ben An, and nearby are the picturesque Lochs Venachar and Achray. The name Turk derives from the Gaelic torc meaning wild boar.
