A location in northeast Angus, Kinnaber lies on the south side of the River North Esk, 2 miles (3 km) north of Montrose. An ice-house on the Kinnaber estate was erected as part of a commercial salmon fishery at the mouth of the river. Kinnaber was at one time a railway junction.
