A village of Stirling Council Area, Deanston lies on the River Teith a mile (1.5 km) to the west of Doune from which it is separated by the Wood of Doune. The village developed in association with a cotton mill established here in 1785. This mill came under the management in 1807 of James Smith (1789 - 1850) an enlightened entrepreneur and philanthropist. Lochills Industrial Estate supports light industry.
