A village on the Mainland of Orkney, Dounby lies to the north of the Loch of Harray, 14 miles (22 km) northwest of Kirkwall. It developed at a crossroads in the 18th century and has a market and facilities serving the surrounding farming community. Between 1939 and 1940 an RAF fighter base operated at Skeabrae just over a mile (2 km) to the west.
