Kippen

A picturesque dormitory village, Kippen lies in the Fintry Hills 10 miles (16 km) west of Stirling. The surrounding parish is known as the 'Kingdom of Kippen', a name that originated in the 16th Century when the local laird adopted John Buchanan as a baby in order to prevent his estate from being acquired by the king. The title 'The King of Kippen' was later bestowed upon John Buchanan by James V. The famous Kippen Vine, planted in 1891, was said to be the largest in the world, covering some 465 sq. metres (5000 sq. feet) of roof space. The vineyard was sold in 1964 and the vine broken up. The home of Scottish Clay Pigeon Shooting, Kippen was the venue for the 1986 Commonwealth Games shooting events. The village has rural industries as well as clock-making and local crafts. Kippen Parish Church (1824) was modernised in 1924 under the guidance of the artist Sir David Young Cameron (1865 - 1945).
