Tarbert

Argyll and Bute

A small settlement and estate in the middle of the island of Jura in the Inner Hebrides, Tarbert lies on Tarbert Bay and inlet of the Sound of Jura, 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Ardlussa. The name suggests an isthmus in Gaelic and indeed here Jura narrows to just ¾ mile (1.2 km) here. This was used by drovers and as a short-cut by sailors, who dragged their boats across the land rather than face the dangerous waters to the north and south of the island.
