Kilmelford (Kilmelfort)
Argyll and Bute

A small village in the Lorn district of Argyll and Bute, Kilmelford lies near the head of Loch Melfort, 13 miles (21 km) south of Oban. A gunpowder works was established here in the late 19th century by the proprietors of the Bonawe Ironworks. In the 20th century the settlement developed in association with tourism, forestry, local hydro-electric schemes. A pier on Loch Melfort attracts yachts and to the southwest are the 8-ha (20-acre) gardens of Arduaine established in 1898 by John Arthur Campbell and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland since 1992.
