Twatt
Orkney

A settlement of Mainland Orkney, Twatt is located 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Dounby and immediately south of the Loch of Boardhouse. A naval air station (HMS Tern) was established beside the Loch of Isbister in 1940. A Sikorsky R-4 helicopter crashed here in 1945, the first recorded helicopter crash in Britain. The station closed in 1949 and was sold in 1957. The unusual control tower and several other buildings remain, together with evidence of its four concrete runways.
