Altnabreac

Highland

A location and a railway station in W Caithness, Altnabreac lies by the Sleach Water on the railway line 9 miles (14 km) east of Forsinard and 23 miles (37 km) west of Wick. It sits in the extensive Altnabreac Moss in the heart of the Flow Country. For a short while in the 1970s the peat moss was exploited by the Hydro Board which established a peat-burning power station here. A remote railway station serving the Highland Line was established here in 1874 and in 1895 the Sinclairs of Ulbster built a hunting lodge at nearby Lochdhu.
