Rushgarry

(Ruisgarry, Risgary, Ruisigearraidh)
Western Isles

A scattered settlement in the northeast of the island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, Rushgarry (also Ruisgarry or Risgary, Gael: Ruisigearraidh) lies a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Borve and 8 miles (13 km) north of Lochmaddy on North Uist. A T-plan Parliamentary Church designed by Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) was built here in 1829. Now B-listed, yet a roofless shell since the building was abandoned in the late 1920s, it was restored as a holiday home and artist's studio in 2011-12, featuring in the Channel 4 television programme The Restoration Man. Berneray harbour lies to the southwest.
