Ardgartan

Argyll and Bute

A location in E Argyll and Bute, Ardgartan lies at the mouth of the Croe Water, on the W shore of Loch Long, 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Arrochar. The Ardgartan Forest is part of the Argyll Forest Park and a Forestry Commission Visitor Centre and camp-site are located here. Ardgartan House, built on a low-lying promontory which extends into Loch Long, was home to the Campbells of Ardgartan but was bought by the King George Jubilee Trust in 1936 to be used as a youth hostel. The house was demolished in the 1950s to be replaced by a modern hostel in the form of a brutalist concrete structure, but this closed in 1998.
