Ardgartan

Argyll and Bute

A location in E Argyll and Bute, Ardgartan lies at the mouth of the Croe Water, on the W shore of Loch Long, 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Arrochar. The Ardgartan Forest is part of the Argyll Forest Park and a Forestry and Land Scotland Visitor Centre, and camp-site are located here. Ardgartan House, built on a low-lying promontory which extends into Loch Long, was home to the Campbells of Ardgartan but was bought by the King George V Jubilee Trust in 1936 to be used as a youth hostel. The house was demolished in the 1950s to be replaced by a modern hostel in the form of a brutalist concrete structure, but this closed in 2002. Having fallen into disrepair, this hostel was demolished and replaced by the 234-bed Ardgartan Hotel, which opened in 2012.
