Pennyvenie

East Ayrshire

A scattered settlement considerably lost through open cast mining, Pennyvenie a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Dalmellington. Pennyvenie Colliery was opened by the Dalmellington Iron Company Ltd in 1872 and finally closed in 1978. At its peak there were 725 men working here and it comprised seven separate pit shafts, the last sunk in 1945. The site was subsequently reworked as an open-cast site, opening in 1986 and operated by Scottish Coal. This employs c.140 workers and produces 750,000 tonnes of coal a year.
