Carlops

A small village on the boundary between the Scottish Borders and Midlothian, Carlops lies to the east of the Pentland Hills on the North Esk, 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Penicuik and 2½ miles (4 km) north northeast of West Linton. Founded in 1784, the village developed in association with cotton-weaving and the mining of coal and limestone. In the late 19th century its industry declined and it became a health-resort, also relying on links with the Edinburgh poet Allan Ramsay (1686 - 1758).
